Everyone who loves to hit the road on long journeys knows about the historic Route 66 that runs through a big chunk of the United States. U.S. Highway 66 was built in 1926 and covers over 2, 448 miles. It runs from Chicago, Illinois, through the states of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona before ending up in Santa Monica, California. It has such a big connection with people that a song in 1946 was made about it (best by Nat King Cole) and a hit TV show was also done in the early 1960’s. This stretch of asphalt goes by a few nicknames such as the Main Street of America, the Will Rogers Highway and the Mother Road and John Steinbeck stated that this highway symbolizes escape, loss and the hope of a new beginning. If you’re gonna drive the whole route, then start in Chicago to enjoy some Blues and some dang good food, then head out across America in a 1950’s/1960’s classic convertible car (if you’re oh-so lucky) and go until you pop out in front of the Pacific Ocean for a fantastic sunset. Along the way, you’ll run into crazy characters, lots of local flavors, great greasy spoons, cool bizarre architecture/art and some of the best scenery you’ll ever see.
