Lamu Island is a port/city and island just off the shores of the East African country of Kenya (in the Indian Ocean). It was founded in the 12th century by sailors and traders from India, China, Arabia and South-East Asia who migrated there and blended in with the Lamu natives. The island is now considered a Swahili settlement that still embraces all parts of the society and trade still goes on there today. There are no cars allowed on the island and it is an out-of-the-way destination for travelers drawn to the to the East African Coast and to the Swahili traditions and unique architecture. And man, does it give off that old world vibe---it literally feels like you stepped back in time as you watch the boats come up to shore with the backdrop of those dwellings built on its shores. There are some good beaches to explore along with the local markets and yummy cuisine. BTW, Lamu Island is also a UNESC) World heritage Site which should tell ya all ya need to know. This bracelet was made to make you feel like you are there and it really pops on the wrist. The Hand-Painted African Glass Beads obviously tie in the authenticity of this piece and the Puka Shell signifies Lamu’s connection to the sea. The Hand-Carved Yak Horn Bead and Ox Bone Beads tie in that old world flare. The 2 large Bone Mala Skulls represent the bringing together of many cultures into one place. As we know, when this happens, the world is a much more flavorful place. This bracelet does look like something you traded for in one of the old market stalls in town. It will surely turn heads and it will make you feel…well…happy. Be happy and travel to those places that make you feel that way. Adios Amigo!
