The New Caledonia Islands are a hidden gem in the South Pacific. These islands are about 750 miles east of Australia and are in the largest continuous barrier reef in the world and second in size only to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. Traces of human life date back to the Lapita culture dating back to 1100 BC. Lots of history here and the culture of Melanesian roots, French influence and Pacific migration cultures have come together here for a wonderful, diverse mix. These islands seemed to have also sprouted differently than many of the south Pacific’s other islands with their unique trees, vegetation and wildlife. The British explorer, James Cook was one of the first Europeans to site these islands in 1774 and named it "New Caledonia", as the northeast of the island reminded him of Scotland. That comparison ends when you see the dreamy deep blue and aqua blue waters that surround these islands. Parts of these islands look a little like the Monterey area in California with a lot more sun and brighter blue waters. Check out Amedee Litehouse, go snorkeling in Lifou Island and strolling along the white sand of Luengoni Beach are just a few cool things to do here. It’s a wonderful part of the Pacific to hang and the locals love to share their blended culture and wonderful cuisine. Let’s get to the bracelet shall we? This piece looks too-cool-for-school on the wrist and has a striking, yet subdued appeal. This bracelet shows off the colors and textures of the unique landscape in New Caledonia. The Kiwi Jasper and Hand-Carved Yak Horn resemble the unique vegetation and aqua green colors of the sea. The Hand-Carved Ox Bone Beads add a tribal flare and do have the look of the sandy/stone shores of the islands. A Keyhole Limpet shell brings in the connection to the sea and the Hand-Carved Māori Fishhook ties into the very important local lineage of the South Pacific Islands. A Bone Mala Skull is included as a reminder for you to hit-up places like these that are off the beaten path for most travelers. These islands in New Caledonia might just be calling your name.
