As you drive south out of Bozeman on U.S. Route 191, you start coming into the Gallatin mountain range and forest. It’s breathtaking and quite exciting knowing you are heading towards Big Timber and Yellowstone country along the Gallatin River. Right before you start into the mountains, there’s a tiny little sign right before a small bridge that says Spanish Creek. Right past the bridge it is a cut-off on your left to park your rig. Head down the small trail 50 – 60 feet through the brush and you’ll come out onto one of the best little fly-fishing spots in Montana. Right there, Spanish Creek feeds into the Gallatin River and it is almost too picturesque for words. On the other side of the river are the craggy cliffs of the Gallatin Gateway. In the Fall, when the trees turn yellow along the river and the sun hits those cliffs…man I tell ya…it feels like you’re in fishing heaven. And yes, if you have the right flies and hit it right, it can be quite fun reeling them in. It’s also a great place to crawl along with your gaiters over the rocky bottom. And if you get skunked, I promise you won’t complain. Do keep your eyes and ears open though because you’re in wild country with lots of things that have big teeth and claws.
