Sumba (spelled Humba by the natives) is Indonesia's hidden island paradise and is considered the unspoiled pearl of the area. It is located in the Eastern Indonesian and administratively part of the East Nusa Tenggara provincial territory. Boy, that was a mouthful! The civilization and historical ruins of the Sumba people on this island date back to B.C. era. The lush landscape consists of low, limestone hills, rather than the steep volcanoes of many Indonesian islands. It's also twice the size of Bali and is “gratefully” underdeveloped. The sandy, virgin beaches are incredible and still uncrowded, there are tons of funky megaliths to explore and the interior landscape is a deep, serene green dotted with high-rise thatched rooftops. These unique rooftops in the villages do stand out over everything there. The steeper roofs supposedly bring you closer to the ancient spirits…as will this bracelet. This bracelet does have a very organic feel and it does look like a piece that was made there. In fact, the big Indonesian Hardwood Bead surrounded by the Hand-Carved African Blackwood gives it its authentic flavor. The Puka Shell and Palm Wood remind you of the coastal beaches and the Large Bone Mala Skull represents the Rato (the Marapu spiritual leader). I love this piece and the way it sits on the wrist--it just looks like it is from that part of the world. It's a piece that will remind you to get out to those type of remote places before they become spoiled. Just get to Mandorak Beach and you’ll get it and whisper to your Rato to guide you there.
